  • Experience shipping projects, not just building demos
  • Clear communication and a low-ego approach to feedback

Bonus points:

  • Familiarity with real-time performance capture or virtual production
  • Experience with Niagara, PCG, or custom tooling

About Sans Strings Studio

Sans Strings Studio is built on a passion for blending expressive artistry with cutting-edge technology. Our mission is to make animation immediate, accessible, and full of soul, creating characters and experiences that truly connect with audiences. Whether for traditional media or interactive platforms, we're focused on building something bold, original, and we’re just getting started!

We're a small team tackling ambitious challenges, and we're looking for people who are excited to help shape both the project and the studio as we grow.

The Role

We're looking for a Technical Animator / Technical Artist with a passion for building tools, solving workflow challenges, and empowering artists and animators to do their best work. This role combines character rigging, animation technology, and tool development to help our team work more effectively in Maya and Unreal Engine 5.

A significant portion of this role involves creating tools, scripts, and workflow solutions that improve efficiency and scalability across the team. We're looking for someone who enjoys identifying problems, building practical solutions, and helping others succeed.

This is a hands-on role on a small team. Success requires initiative, strong communication, and a willingness to contribute wherever your skills can help move the project forward.

The ideal candidate doesn't wait for a task list to appear. You see friction points, identify opportunities to improve workflows, and proactively jump in to solve problems before they become roadblocks.

As a small startup studio, every team member has meaningful influence on the project. We're looking for someone who is collaborative, communicative, adaptable, and excited to help build something from the ground up.

What You'll Do

  • Develop tools, scripts, and workflows that improve artist and animator efficiency.
  • Create and maintain animation, rigging, and character pipelines between Maya and Unreal Engine 5.
  • Build and support Unreal Engine 5 Control Rig and Physics Rig systems.
  • Partner closely with animators, artists, designers, and engineers to solve production challenges.
  • Identify bottlenecks and workflow issues and proactively propose solutions.
  • Troubleshoot technical art and animation issues across the project.
  • Help establish scalable pipelines and best practices for a growing team.
  • Support character setup, rigging, procedural animation, and runtime animation systems as needed.
  • Document workflows and communicate solutions clearly to team members.
  • Contribute to a culture of ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional experience as a Technical Animator, Technical Artist, Technical Director, or similar role, with at least one shipped title.
  • Strong proficiency with Maya.
  • Strong proficiency with Unreal Engine 5.
  • Experience working with Control Rig and Physics Rig systems.
  • Demonstrated experience creating tools, scripts, workflow improvements, or pipeline solutions for artists and animators.
  • Strong understanding of character rigging, animation workflows, and runtime animation systems.
  • Strong problem-solving and debugging skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Passion for helping others and improving team workflows.
  • Experience working on shipped games.

Nice To Have

  • Python, MEL, Blueprint, or C++ scripting experience.
  • Experience with procedural animation systems.
  • Experience supporting motion capture, facial animation, or procedural animation workflows.
  • Startup or small-team development experience.
  • Experience developing artist-facing tools within Maya or Unreal Engine.

Success In This Role

After your first few months, you'll have identified key workflow challenges, implemented meaningful improvements, and become a trusted technical partner for our artists and animators. You'll work with the team to create and build upon systems that allow a small team to move faster, iterate more effectively, and deliver high-quality character experiences.

You'll be someone the team can rely on to solve difficult technical problems, improve workflows, and help turn ambitious creative goals into practical production solutions.

Application Notes

Please include examples of tools, scripts, workflow improvements, or pipeline solutions you've personally created. We'd love to hear about the problem you were solving, your approach, and the impact your solution had on the team.

Please also tell us about a time you identified a problem that wasn't assigned to you and took the initiative to solve it. What was the situation, what action did you take, and what was the outcome?

If that sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you.

Whether for traditional media or interactive platforms, we're focused on building something bold, original, and we’re just getting started!

We're a small team tackling ambitious challenges, and we're looking for people who are excited to help shape both the project and the studio as we grow.

The Role

We're looking for a Technical Game Designer who loves building gameplay as much as designing it. This is a highly hands-on role focused on rapidly prototyping, implementing, and refining gameplay systems using Unreal Engine 5 Blueprints.

You'll work across combat, NPC AI, progression, player interaction, UI, and core gameplay systems, collaborating closely with design, animation, engineering, art, and production to bring ideas from concept to polished gameplay.

This is a hands-on role on a small team. Success requires initiative, strong communication, and a willingness to contribute wherever your skills can help move the project forward.

The ideal candidate doesn't wait for perfect design documentation before getting started. You're comfortable experimenting, rapidly prototyping ideas, identifying problems, and collaborating with the team to discover the best solution. You enjoy wearing multiple hats and helping transform creative ideas into fun player experiences.

What You'll Do

  • Prototype, implement, and iterate on gameplay features using Unreal Engine 5 Blueprints.
  • Design and build gameplay systems including combat, AI behaviors, player abilities, progression, UI, and game flow.
  • Collaborate with artists, animators, engineers, and designers to bring gameplay ideas to life.
  • Rapidly prototype new mechanics and iterate based on player feedback and team playtests.
  • Balance gameplay systems to create engaging, rewarding player experiences.
  • Debug, optimize, and improve gameplay systems throughout development.
  • Help define technical workflows and best practices for gameplay implementation.
  • Create clear documentation when needed while maintaining an iterative development mindset.
  • Contribute ideas that improve the game, not just implement assigned features.

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of professional game development experience with at least one shipped title.
  • Strong proficiency with Unreal Engine 5 and Blueprint scripting.
  • Excellent understanding of gameplay systems, player progression, AI behavior, combat systems, and player experience.
  • Experience implementing gameplay directly rather than only writing design documentation.
  • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working with Perforce or similar version control systems.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate across multiple disciplines.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to manage priorities independently.
  • Passion for making games that are fun, polished, and memorable.

Nice To Have

  • C++ experience.
  • Experience with animation systems, Control Rig, or procedural gameplay.
  • Experience working on stylized or character-driven games.
  • Startup or small-team development experience.

Success In This Role

After your first few months, you'll have worked on multiple gameplay features, improved existing systems, and become a trusted gameplay partner across the team. You'll be someone who doesn't simply implement mechanics, you help make them better.

You'll contribute thoughtful ideas, identify potential gameplay issues early, and help shape the overall player experience through rapid iteration and collaboration.

Application Notes

Please include examples of gameplay systems or mechanics you've personally implemented in Unreal Engine.

We'd also love to hear about a gameplay feature that you designed or improved because you believed it could be better, not because someone asked you to. Tell us what the original problem was, how you identified and raised the issue to leadership, what changes you made, and how you evaluated whether the solution was successful.

If that sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you.
